Program Description

The Master of Professional Studies (MPS) in Global Development (GDEV) is a one-year, interdisciplinary graduate-level degree program combining a flexible course-based curriculum with a capstone or problem-solving project. The program is designed to enhance practical and technical skills and to prepare students for careers in field-based development and development policy roles serving low-income and rural communities globally.

Global Development unites critical scholarship and practice at the intersections of agricultural, environmental, life, and social sciences, to advance a more equitable, sustainable, and food-secure world. The MPS degree focuses on education with impact, through a transdisciplinary approach that emphasizes real-world engagement on a global scale — with communities in New York State, across the United States, and around the world. Instead of a thesis or research project, MPS students complete a capstone project which allows them to apply their knowledge and skills in a practical manner.

The Global Development MPS program has two main components:

  • Coursework (30 credit hours): Students work with a faculty advisor to map out their individualized course of study based on their areas of interest. The majority of courses (20 credits) will be within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS); however, students have the opportunity to take courses across Cornell.
  • Capstone Project (2-6 credit hours): With the guidance of a faculty advisor, students work on solving a collaborative project and/or a real-world problem.

Students in the MPS in Global Development custom build courses of study in consultation with their faculty advisors. A strength of the program is its flexibility; students are able to tailor their coursework to fill gaps based on previous studies, field experiences, and desired career paths.
